The Art Project

The BRIDGE WITHIN Art Project is reflecting the concept of "in-between", referred to the cities of Venice (IT) and Istanbul (TR).

The idea is to consider the two historical bridges of the cities like a real and metaphorical between and to consider them as possible exhibition areas.

By collecting illustrations, photographs, whatever, directly inspired by the concepts of between, Venice, Istanbul, my idea is to ask italian and turkish artists to collaborate in developing artistic works inspired by the three concepts.

The result will be a diary, portraying this artistic twinning between the two cities.

Denis Pitter

Introduction - Başlangıç - Introduzione

From the very start of this project I’ve been asked what the in-between meant to me, this enigmatic concept which is the starting point of this artistic journey. I asked myself what it represents in relation to a city like Istanbul, which is built between two continents, between two seas, two cultures, and to a city like Venice, known for its bridges and canals, historically bound to the Ottoman Empire.
The first image which came to my mind is the bridge as symbol of in-between par excellence, a real and virtual connection between physical and psychological worlds. The short-living of the in-between makes it difficult to represent it. So I asked myself whether it is possible to examine it from different points of view.
While Perec plays with real and abstract spaces, Foucault talks of heterotopias, "Those spaces which have the distinctive feature of being linked to all the other spaces, but in a way that they suspend, neutralize or invert the wholesomeness of the relationships which they designate, reflect or in which they are reflected."
I then hypothesized that art can bridge this descriptive gap, so I then created this artistic heterotopia taking advantage of the historical bridges of Galata and Rialto in the cities of Istanbul and Venice, always connoted as multiform urban realities from different points of view.
I involved in this work three young Turkish artist and three Italian ones and asked them to represent the between with the form of art most congenial to them, carrying then out the symbolic action of exhibiting these pieces on the bridges of the two cities. In this moment the Foucauldian heretotopia is created: art has lived the between, the bridges become physical places, but others.

I would like to thank Kürşat Ünsal, Mehmet Sina Demiral, Berat Pekmezci, Marta Berton, Alessia Catanuto, Alessandra Scagnetti, Kevin Fanelli and Yonca Ural for their help in developing this project.

About me...

Denis Pitter was born in Trieste in 1984 and is currently living in Venice.
After having attended Communication Studies at the University of Trieste, he decided to move to Venice to complete his formation in visual communication and is currently studying at the Faculty of Design and Arts at IUAV University of Venice.
His interests are oriented to photography, graphic design and arts in general and he took part to several exhibitions in Trieste, Clès (TN) and Venice.

These are some other illustrations and photographs used for this project and made by me.

"Galata Bridge", by Mehmet Sina Demiral

Mehmet Sina Demiral was born in Diyarbakır in 1982. After finishing elementary, intermediate and high school he left Diyarbakır to attend Istanbul Technical University Department of Management Engineering. After finishing his education in 2004 he took up photography, celebrating his love of Istanbul in his photographs. His photography has decorated the pages of with "Istanbul.com" and "In Istanbul" magazine. He is currently doing his own photography projects.

He has attended Mixed Exhibitions: "Thinking of Istanbul," organized by Fotofanclub Mixed Exhibition, and ITU Deviants Mixed Exhibitions. His photographs have been published in "Foreign Policy," "Popüler Tarih", "Chica," "Go-Girl," "Ekonometri" magazines, and in Istanbul catalogues.

M. Sina Demiral's thoughts on photography and his works are grounded in the belief that, while anyone can take a photograph, only a few photographs are art-worthy.

He believes that the compositional components which will bear meaning within the photograph can be created by the careful lighting for the vision of the piece.

While working on portraits, the person is the basic component. He wants to celebrate the person, never exploiting them for the image -- except in spontaneous works and with the person's permission even before the shot is taken.

Although he believes that a photograph can be taken everywhere, he does not believe every photograph from every place can be successful. In photography, he believes in the naturalness of the moment. In fictitious scenes he believes that the subject of the fictions should be either absurd or natural. He is not against the use of digital processing of photography; so long as it is used judiciously and with an eye for the value inherit in the art.
